Description

Well-written processes and procedures help create a safe working environment, ensure the delivery of consistently high-quality products, ensure excellent customer service, and decrease performance errors. In this workshop participants explore practical techniques to produce clear, complete, well-organized processes and procedures. 


Course Outline

Topics include:

  • The value, purpose and function of standard processes and procedures. A practical streamlined approach for documenting best practices and developing processes and procedures. How to include a training record for procedures.
  • Standard format, numbering, and content. How to write purpose, scope, and responsibilities statements; describe equipment/materials; and write a glossary. How to write safety warnings and equipment cautions. How to organize and write step-by-step instructions. Suggestions for establishing a formal review and revision process.
  • Five steps to eliminate wordiness. Tips for using active or passive voice and positive wording in processes and procedures. How to anticipate and answer users’ questions to ensure complete information. When and how to translate technical terms.
  • How to write for readers with varying levels of expertise. When and how to incorporate illustrations.
  • Tips to ensure mechanically correct processes and procedures. A review of essential punctuation and grammar rules. An Editing Checklist for Processes and Procedures.

Participants are invited to send samples of their on-the-job writing for confidential feedback.
